Mike Pickup
We would like to nominate Mike Pickup for this award.
Mike has encouraged the appreciation of nature through education.
Mike is a past co-chair for the HURON FRINGE BIRDING FESTIVAL (now in its 19th year), former Chair of the FRIENDS OF MACGREGOR POINT PARK, volunteered for Bird Studies Canada doing Nocturnal Owl Surveys, breeding Bird Surveys, Forest monitoring Surveys, and volunteered for the 1st and 2nd Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario.
Mike has authored “Birding the Bruce Peninsula” “Birding Macgregor”. His latest book will be launched at the Huron Fringe Birding Festival this year. It is “Birding in South Bruce Country”. Mike is working on a Bird Trail Map for Bruce County.
Mike Pickup was born in Lancashire England, and immigrated to Canada in 1956. His interest in nature was sparked at a young age on afternoon walks in the English countryside when his father attempted to answer many queries about birds and nature in general. In Georgetown, Ontario , Mike remained aware of the surrounding natural environment hiking and exploring the Bruce Trail.
A job opening as a draftsman with Ontario Hydro brought Mike and his family to Port Elgin in 1977.
He is a member and hike leader for the Bruce Birding Club and is/ was a member of the Saugeen Field Naturalists and also the Owen Sound Field Naturalists.
We believe that Mike is a worthy candidate for Nomination.
