Outing: Paddle the Rankin

July 6, 2019

Event Information:

The Rankin River with its shallow warm-water lakes in South Bruce Peninsula is one of the best “naturalists”” canoe and kayak trips in the area (popular with fishermen too). The water- shed includes Sky, Isaac, Boat and Spry lakes, the short sections of river which connect them and adjacent woodlands and wetlands rich in wildlife. A leisurely paddle may reveal marsh wrens, black terns, woodland warblers, loons, osprey, bald eagle and trees, shrubs, wild rice and emergent wetland plants. We will go ashore for lunch and rustic washroom break.
Meet at 10:00 am at the boat launch where Bruce Road 13 crosses the river 7.5 km west of Wiarton and 3.5 km east of the Oliphant corner. Bring your canoe or kayak, safety gear, lunch, lots of water, protection from sun and insects.
Register with Nikki May at saugeenfieldnaturalists@yahoo.ca. Let her know if you have room for a paddling partner or need a space in a canoe. We have 3-5 extra spots available for those without boats.
