When the Trees Talk With Each Other
Event Information:
David Hawke is a naturalist who writes about and photographs the natural world. His weekly nature column has appeared continuously for 33 years; he has received the Richard’s Education Award from Ontario Nature and his book “Wetlands” has won the Best Book Award from the Outdoor Writers of Canada. He has worked as a naturalist and wildlife technician at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre and the Tiny Marsh Provincial Wildlife Area, and most recently was with the Couchiching Conservancy Land Trust as their property stewardship manager and ecologist.
In this presentation David will discuss the edible nuts and berries produced by trees. Depending on the species and weather conditions, there will be a year of abundant growth and seed production followed by years of famine. He will tell us how oak trees across North America seem to time their acorn years all together, and how wildlife species can flourish and then wither depending on this food source.
