new
innocent
A ruffed grouse chick
wanders onto the road
mesmerized by light and space
its tiny feet running.
It disregards
maternal clucks
when nest mates
scurry under cover.
Carefully I reach
and cradle the tiny
being of fluffy down
place it close to family
pray for its survival
into parenthood.
I walk away
richly blessed
with the touch
soft
new
innocence.
