Meeting: Nuclear Waste Management Organization

March 18, 2019

Event Information:

“Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) speakers will share information about the collaborative development and implementation of Canada’s plan for the safe, long term management of used nuclear fuel.”

“Canada has been generating electricity from nuclear power stations for more than half a century. Nuclear is currently responsible for more than 50 per cent of Ontario’s electricity. One of the legacies of this electricity production is used nuclear fuel, which is a compact, solid and potentially hazardous material that needs to be contained and isolated from people and the environment, essentially indefinitely. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) was established in 2002 by Canada’s nuclear electricity producers in accordance with the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act (NFWA). Operating on a not-for-profit basis, we are responsible for designing and implementing Canada’s plan for the long-term management of used nuclear fuel.”

Speakers Cherie Leslie is the NWMO’s Senior Engagement Advisor for Southwestern Ontario. Cherie has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, with a major in Planning. Cherie was born and raised in Bruce County and has 10 years of experience in municipal planning and community engagement.

Paul Austin is the NWMO’s Relationship Manager in Southern Ontario. Paul works closely with local communities, organizations and individuals to coordinate and support learning about Canada’s plan for the safe, long term management of used nuclear fuel.
